| It seems that for all too long Berea has been in a strangle hold of
negativity. Positive comments, if any, have been few and far between. I am so
glad to see that someone has commented on the beauty of the Coe Lake area. How
refreshing! Mayor Biddlecombe has extended the olive branch to the many
residents of Berea that have felt less than satisfied with our city government.
I encourage all to consider volunteering for a position on the new committees
that the Mayor has established. It is easier to tear down than to build up -
please help rebuild the trust in government in our city by stepping forward and
serve. If you chose not to - remember you have no one to blame for what happens
in Berea but yourself. I appreciate the opportunity to voice my opinion. I wish all my fellow Bereans a very happy holiday season.

Subject - Congratulations, Berea! And Beware!
|
Date - Dec. 4, 1999
|
| I agree with Dr. Klemperer: the last Town Forum meeting offered an
exciting prospect of a mayor sympathetic to grassroots activism, and open to
creative new ideas. Bereans should congratulate themselves, for they made
themselves clearly heard in the results of the last election: they want a mayor
who would be able to put ego aside and listen. On Wednesday, December 1, Mr.
Biddlecombe showed that he could serve in that capacity. It was a great start.
But politicians need oversight to keep them responsive and polite. As I have
heard it, Mr. Trupo began his mayoral career as the people's man. Years and
years in any job creates a certain amount of complacency. It's up to the people
of Berea to continue to be interested and involved, so that our elected officials will continue to be held accountable. Fortunately, the Berea Town
Forum is there to provide the perfect means to that end.

| What a wonderful gathering--300 friends and neighbors asking involved,
intelligent questions. I was impressed with Mayor Biddlecombe's answers, and I
was delighted that he will continue to come or send a representative to our
future Town Forum meetings. I hope the citizens of Berea stay involved with our
new city government through the challenging times ahead. One way you can stay
involved is by accepting Joe Biddlecombe's invitation to apply for membership on
one of his five new citizen boards--on beatification & image, the elderly, the
youth, downtown, and the arts & humanities. I would like to know how others
felt about last night's Town Forum meeting. I look forward to reading other
messages about the meeting on this discussion page.--Fritz

| I'm curious regarding the new condos on the Triangle. Are the people
who are buying those required to sign any kind of waiver so that they understand
that the Triangle is a public area? Could the City of Berea face future lawsuits
from Triangle Home Dwellers regarding noise from Crus'ins, parades, holiday

Those who are willing to stand up and be counted should not be timid about

I enjoy reading your intelligent, well written submissions, and I hope you continue to write often to this page. One of the nice things about Town Forum is that everyone who lives in Berea is a member. Town Forum is not a club; it is simply comprised of whoever wishes to attend any given gathering. There are nine trustees (I'm not one of them) who meet mostly to decide on agendas. However, the group's momentum is powered by the citizens who wish to attend and participate on any given month. Like the web site, it is as rich as our towns people make it. I have been delighted that most of the gatherings have been very active and inspiring.
I agree that my announcement of the Dec. 1 meeting with Joe Biddlecombe may have sounded somewhat effusive. My intent was not to endorse his campaign, but rather to motivate people to stay involved in our town by coming to this important event. I am glad Mr. Biddlecombe will come and talk with us now rather than later because this will give him a golden opportunity to immediately begin to bridge what had become a canyon between the previous administration and the towns people. I hope the tenor of the meeting will be neither of bitter retribution nor of blind adulation for the new mayor. Rather I hope, that like many of the previous BTF meetings, the discussion is inspiring. Please spread the word, and come and bring your friends. I look forward to meeting you and hearing your questions.
Cheers -- Fritz

| I was wondering if anyone is aware of what the city may be doing in
order to help prepare the residents about the upcoming y2k crisis. Is the water
department ready? gas company. electric company. ready? Is the city planning on any emergency
shelters if it ends up to be real bad? Can the city inform the residents of the
status of their y2k compliance? I know of neighboring cities that have sent out
new letters with suggestions on how to prepare and what the city will have to
offer its people should it be a serious situation. Does any one have any info
on this? And I would like to see what the city has ready, feel free to reply to

Subject - BTF Biddlecombe Invite
|
Date - Nov. 18,1999

I do not pretend to speak for BTF; I am not even a member. Of course, I DO
appreciate the vehicle the group provides for public discourse. The web
site affords Bereans (at least those with Internet access) a great
opportunity to express themselves.
Additionally, while I have voiced public support for Audrey Carlo, I was
not a member of her campaign team (I have yet to even meet her, though I
look forward to doing so). I admire her stated goals, the way she
conducted herself throughout the campaign, and the very real change she's
helped effect with respect to Berea's political "balance of power."
That said, I must confess to confusion concerning the tone of BTF's
announcement of its Dec. 1st meeting, which will feature new mayor Joseph
Biddlecombe: "proud to welcome"; "inspiring discussion"; "celebrate the
beginning of a new era," etc. That sounds a bit effusive, considering the
kind of campaign Mr. Biddlecombe's people ran.
BTF should, of course, be a gracious host to all of its invitees. Still, I
must question the invitation, itself. Unless I miss my guess, a majority
of BTF's members likely were NOT Biddlecombe supporters in the last
election. Further, his campaign staff used tactics that can generously be
described as "questionable."
Does that mean that he shouldn't be permitted to speak at a BTF
meeting? No. But it does mean, in my humble opinion, that, instead of
being the group's first post-election invitee, BTF should have waited for
Mr. Biddlecombe to extend an olive branch by requesting the opportunity to
speak. And, instead of sharing his "Vision for Berea," perhaps Mr.
Biddlecombe would better serve everyone (himself included) by explaining
how he plans to help to bridge the chasm, widened by his campaign, that
exists among Berea's electorate.
There are very real issues confronting our town, and we must all pull
together to address them. Mr. Biddlecombe may prove able -- or better --
in his role as mayor. Time will tell. For the good of Berea, I sincerely
hope he does well. And we should always, of course, treat elected
officials (and every other citizen) with dignity and respect. I, for one,
however, believe the "celebration" a bit premature.
[NOTE: my submissions tend to be a bit lengthy. In an attempt to avoid
"hogging" the medium, I will likely write less often. Anyone wishing to
communicate with me directly is encouraged to do so by sending me e-mail

Yes, Mr. Bob Z., the Triangle looks nice. However, it has now been made into the Trupo-Caprini-Blaze Triangle. They have added
that Brook Park brick tower and a lot of pink concrete, and tried to minimize the historical aspect. Now; Trupo wants to place the bronze plaques honoring the Grindstone Award Winners, which include some of the founders of Berea, at Coe Lake instead of on the Triangle where they belong. I notice that he has placed bronze plaques with the names of
himself, the city officials, and his friends in the construction business and the triangle committee on rocks on the Triangle though.
I have heard that the Ohio State University professor of architecture whose students came to Berea with their models of ideas for the riverfront project and triangle was in town
recently. When he saw the triangle and riverfront, he just shook his head. Definitely not impressed.

| The new appearance of the Triangle is beautiful. It's the best it's
looked in years. The city administration is to be commended for the new "look."
Re the condo project. I've heard recently that even Mr. Greg Miller himself has
now commended Mr. Caprini for the project. Mr. Miller learned that the project
is indeed ahead of schedule. Patience, people!!! That area has looked
deplorable for years. Surely, a year or two more to drastically improve the
area is not too much to ask at this point. Progress is being made. The
planners and developers have done a wonderful job. Give them time to complete
the task. The new, improved Berea is coming to fruition!!! We'll all be proud
and happy when it's finished.

First of all as stated by the web master, I don't have to post a name on

of my job, which I will no disclose, I feel that by posting my name and the
thousands of people who know me could find that I live in this city and could
see my opinions which are none of their concern. By them seeing my opinions
outside of the work environment, this could lead them to develop a different

Dear Town Forum Viewers.
Although I did not win my campaigning for Council-at-Large I do not regret one
moment of it. I have attending many Town Forum monthly meetings and because of
that I was informed with up to date extensive information on almost every issue
citizens were concerned about in Berea. If any one wants to know the issues The
Berea Town Forum is the place to go.
The Town Forum web page has over 5,000 hits since January 1999! That is the
evidence that The Forum is doing a good job and people in Berea really do care
about their city.
I love Berea and am greatly encouraged by how many other people feel the same
way I do. I am grateful for all 896 people who voted for me and am delighted to see so many people getting involved with our community. It was fun. I am looking
forward to the year 2000 and the Forum. Thank you Thereasa Reiland

Subject - Airport Expansion
|

Mr. Murray,
That was well said and every point you make is valid and true to everyone in the
city of Berea. I believe I live in one of those homes that may be lost if in
fact this expansion goes through. If you should have any information on the
city hall council meetings at Cleveland please e-mail them to me. I would like to
attend and voice my concern. I have some friends that work in city hall(
Cleveland) and I have heard that it is run by the snap of the fingers, if the
mayor says jump, you do it and then ask how high? I believe that the mayor of
Berea and Brook Park and Olmsted Falls/Township should all get together and inform
their citizens of what could take place. I have received absolutely NOTHING in
the mail about council meetings and expansion plans. Now if you look on your local cable stations, it says that all Sun News Subscribers should receive some
info on these meetings and what they are about? Funny thing... I have NEVER
received a thing in the mail. I challenge the new!
mayor to inform the people of Berea about these meetings, rather than let us
have to search it out. Communication is a two way street, from the top down and
from the bottom up, I believe we are trying to do our part, now lets hope our
NEW look in city hall will do theirs.
The point I like the most is that you are correct when you say Cleveland Hopkins
International Airport. I am wondering who made Mr White my mayor and allowed him to
decide to destroy my house. I don't live in Cleveland and i never voted for him.
When we bought our house, the people we sold it to were the children that grew
up in this house, their parents had died and they decided to sell. One of the
things that our real estate agent said was that the 'kids' that grew up in this house wanted to know who was going to buy it because they wanted to make sure it
would be well taken care of. After all, this is where they were raised. We
assured them we would, because in time, I will be in their shoe's. However, I
no longer am able to assure them of that because of Planes, Trains and whatever
else is yet to come.

Subject - Copy of "Letter to the Editor", The Plain Dealer
|
Date - Nov. 8,1999
|
Copy of "Letter to the Editor," The Plain Dealer:
Once again, Berea is being asked to fall on its sword for "The Good of the
Region." Just as other communities in Northeast Ohio sought --
successfully -- to avoid the worst of the train traffic increase (brought
on by the recent mergers) by routing it through Berea, so too is Cleveland
now seeking to spare itself hardship by asking its southwest "neighbor" to
bear yet another burden. This time Bereans are being asked to accept the
demolition of homes and the increase in air traffic and noise that airport
expansion to the southwest would bring.
To quote Yogi Berra, it sounds like "deja vu all over again." Not only did
other communities in Greater Cleveland successfully avoid an increase in
train traffic, some -- notably those along the West Shore -- actually
achieved a decrease in traffic, even as Berea's already-high level
skyrocketed. At the time the issue was being debated, The Plain Dealer
took the following two positions:
1) That Berea should think regionally, not locally. Translation: "Ask
not what Northeast Ohio can do for you, ask what you can do for Northeast
Ohio," and
2) "It is right for communities to consider Quality of Life
issues." Translation: If you live in Cleveland or along the West Shore,
it's OK to be concerned with your own welfare (as noted in item #1,
however, disregard if you live in Berea).
It seems to me that "The Region" and The Plain Dealer are asking more of
Bereans than to be good neighbors: you're asking us to be martyrs. No thanks.
The Plain Dealer clearly is not concerned at all with the welfare of
Bereans (it's a pretty safe bet that none of the PD's senior executives
live here). The Plain Dealer uses as rationale for the reasonableness of
expanding south that more homes would be lost by expanding north. But
Cleveland should be the community to accommodate the expansion...and any
accompanying inconvenience.
The airport is, after all, named the Cleveland Hopkins International
Airport. I don't find the name Berea anywhere in that title. Further,
profits from airport operations do not go into Berea coffers. They go, you
guessed it, into Cleveland's. Why, then, should Berea sacrifice for
Cleveland's gain? Cleveland mayor Michael White has, in the past, accused
those who oppose airport expansion southwest (through the IX Center) of
being "greedy suburbanites." That's despicable. And it rings false, when
you consider that Cleveland seeks to profit at the expense and
inconvenience of other communities. Which community is truly being greedy?
If management at The Plain Dealer really is sincere about this Regional
Thinking thing, it should be responsible and propose a genuinely regional
concept: moving the entire airport to a location central to Northeast
Ohio. Someplace directly south, central to Cleveland and Akron. That
would solve expansion problems and be a boost to the entire region. (Last
time I checked, Akron was part of Northeast Ohio.)
The Plain Dealer's reasons for opposing such a move are specious. People
wouldn't drive to such a location? Ask those who live in Greater
Cleveland's Eastern suburbs...or anyone east of the Cuyahoga River, for
that matter. I suspect the PD's objection to such a genuinely regional air
facility has less to do with concern for driving times than it does with
revenue sharing.
I must say, too, that I am deeply disappointed in The Plain Dealer's naked
"homer" attitude when it comes to issues that concern Cleveland. The PD
some time ago changed its name from The Cleveland Plain Dealer to
simply: The Plain Dealer. It proclaims its status as "Ohio's Largest
Newspaper" and professes to represent all of Northeast Ohio. (If you
don't believe that, check with the businesses it solicits for advertising
space within the seven-county region). When it comes down to brass tacks,
however, the PD clearly has a Cleveland-centric view. That's OK, but we
readers shouldn't, then, look to its editorial board for advice on regional
matters.
That Berea's elected officials have rolled over for Greater Cleveland in
the past should not give anyone a false sense of security now. I -- and I
suspect many other Bereans -- intend to fight hard for our town this time
around. I'm tired of my community playing patsy to Northeast Ohio.
Not too long ago, a regional trash transfer station was proposed for
Berea. Residents shot that idea down (although many believe that Cuyahoga
County is still quietly working to build one here). It seems that if
Cleveland and The Plain Dealer have their way, Berea will truly be the town
of "Planes, Trains, and Trash."
Don't bet on it.

While I cannot know how you feel today, I do know that there have been
happier days for you. I'm a little depressed, myself.
When the cloud lifts, however, I hope you will be able to take some solace
in knowing that you have markedly changed the political landscape in
Berea. Before your efforts over the past several years, an entrenched
group controlled pretty much everything in this town.
Thanks in large measure to your "heavy lifting," that crowd is largely
gone. No longer does one group have a stranglehold on the city government
offices of mayor, council president, and a majority of council wards. That
there is now some semblance of balance is almost entirely a result of your
work. Your courage and your commitment -- while not benefitting you
directly -- have made Berea better.
You know, my initial support of you was basic: you were not Stanley Trupo,
or one of his kind. As I watched your campaign progress, I developed
genuine admiration for you, yourself. Your motives were honorable and your
tactics were clean.
I hope you will not give up on politics in Berea. When you are involved,

| Cleveland Plain Dealer, Wednesday, October 27, 1999, endorses Audrey
Carlo for Mayor of Berea.
"Carlo, 61, is a popular, two-term council member whose campaign is based
largely on a pledge to restore trust in city government and communicate openly
with residents. Carlo lacks Biddlecombe's polish, but she seems deeply
committed to her community and makes a strong case for a new leadership team in
City Hall." "Carlo should be elected on Tuesday."

| Within the last few days information has appeared in both the Plain
Dealer and the News Sun which should be of interest to voters.
The Plain Dealer has endorsed Audrey Carlo for Mayor. This follows the New
Sun's endorsement of Carlo a couple of weeks ago.
In the editorial section of the October 28,1999, The New Sun published the top
contributors to the Biddlecombe campaign. I find it surprising that Joe
Biddlecombe continues to profess his independence from Stan Trupo, but the
Friends of Stan Trupo was the top contributor to his campaign in the amount of
$4,000! Ferris Kleem came in second with cumulative contributions of $1,330.
The real eye-opener is the fact that the recently chosen consultant for the various railroad projects, Gannett Fleming Cordory & Carpenter, ranked number
five at $880! It certainly is difficult to proclaim independence from someone
when you are taking their money.
An old political adage advises to "follow the money". Voters should ask
themselves if they want a fresh start at city hall or if they want more of the
same antics we've seen for the past 12 years. Don't you think it's time for a
change?

| The democratic party of Berea must be very proud of itself, after all, that was a
stunning piece of literature they sent out! "If you can't convince them,
confuse them." I never knew that they had a new party slogan!? Oh well, what
is a resident to do? I do not know a lot about Audrey Carlo, however, I can read
and add. The sign does not say " Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds" and $91,000 is
more than 50% of $140.000. I guess if you also figured in all of the other
positions and perks, he just might take down $140.000 from us taxpayers. I
really like the one about the Browns....what good is a twenty year lease on an
empty building? Has anyone ever heard of tax revenue on salaries? (That would be the money lost to the city if the "leased" building was empty!) In closing,
it seems that if you can't please the public or make it on your own in Berea
politics, you must join a "Team"...that way you'll have 2000 reasons to sling
mud and hide behind the hidden truth. That my friends!
is only the opinion of one poor ole stupid resident or so they think!

desperate politicians who do not want to lose their stranglehold on city hall.
You have my word that my campaign has, and will, be based solely on issues and
fact. I will continue to run an honest and fair campaign. Just as a return to
traditional values is important, so is a return to clean political campaigns.
Your trust and awareness is appreciated. For more information call the Carlo

| I just received something in the mail today that really bothered me and
I wanted to share this with you. It was a flyer about Audrey Carlo, please keep
in mind this is not my intention to support or not support this person, I am
still undecided and I would never tell who I vote for anyways. But this mail is
a flyer that has 6 lies in it that are related to Audrey Carlo. About the
salary of the mayor, being connected to Stan Trupo, fairgrounds, and the browns.
It states in red what her lie is and then in black what the truth is. It says
on the bottom that it was paid for by Berea Democratic Action Committee, William
P Mc Carthy, Treasurer, and an address that I will not post. The point is, it
is time to grow up and quit the mud shining here and every where. This mail only discourages me from voting. It tells me that you can not trust anyone
because they all have secrets we don't know about. I will however vote. I just
wish that this type of campaigning would st!
op. This is just one persons way of raising doubts about the ability of another
person. Let me decide that I don't want your help and I did not ask for your
help. If you are proud of this flyer, then that tells me a lot about you and the
type of person you are. Please don't waste the postmans time and energy
delivering this to my door, I don't want it. Please ask yourself what was
accomplished with this. It does not make me think any less of Audrey Carlo nor
anymore of her, it simply puts doubt im my mind as to whether or not I should
take the time to vote for anyone. And with that you have destroyed what this
nation is about, Freedom and Democracy.

Subject - V-Group Raises eyebrows
|
Date - Oct. 21, 1999
|
| The selection of Gannett Fleming Engineers & Architects by Mayor Stan Trupo has been raising eyebrows. At the November 12th council meeting, Lou Stefanini asked, "Was our city council involved in the selection of the railroad Project Manager Consultant Agreement?" Mr. Stefanini's question brought a moment of sober silence. President of Council, Jeff King, responded by saying, "I had no involvement in the selection (of Gannett Fleming)." King then invited other council members to respond. Onl Greg Miller replied by confirming that no council members participated in the selection process. The signed, but undated Project Manager Consultant Agreement between the City of Berea and Gannett Fleming leaves open the question of how much is involved. The agreement limits the company's fees to $250.000 for 1999, but fails to address the costs associated for the year 2000 and beyond. Stefanini believes this type of open-ended agreement will lead to consulting fee abuse, i!f past performance is any indication. Such suspicions appear to be well founded. On page 20 of the city's agreement with Gannett Fleming is a one-sentence reference to The V-Group, noting the subconsultant is to provide the personnel for the project administration and construction management. The V-Group, owned by Paul Voinovich, has repeatedly been under fire for alleged contract steering and double-billing. According to the Akron-Beacon Journal, the V-Group has been investigated for cost overruns. In a $16 million jail project in Jefferson County for example, cost overruns due to change orders skyrocketed to more than $25 million before the project was completed. In another jail project in Franklin County (Columbus), the Voinovich Companies provided the architectural assessment, estimating the renovation would cost $2 million. The project quickly became an $11 million-plus undertaking. In a November 1998 press release by the Ohio Democratic Party alleged "criminal none!y-laundering by George and Paul Voinovich." The release stated that, "The complaint (filed by Robert A. Taft) outlines Voinovich's plan to launder funds through third parties to hide campaign expenditures. It specifically names Paul Voinovich's V-Group as a participant in the laundering scheme." This last July, Summit County Council members were in the midst of deciding whether to bar the V-Group from doing business within their county. According to another article in the Akron Beacon Journal, The V-Group appears to have been involved in a wide-range of improper activities. There was enough allegations and accusations that prompted council members to take a "good look at what's going on." Berea residents should take a closer look a The V-Group to see who will be paying for the cost-overruns, once the designated subconsultant begins billing for services.Cudos to Mr Stefanini for the proper hard-hitting questions, and questions for Bereans to the present power structure.

|
| : Good evening. I would like to express my thanks to the League of Women
Voters, and to fellow citizens. The upcoming election will determine our
collective future. As the endorsed independent candidate, this campaign has
afforded my wife Sandra, and I an impressive journey through Ward 4. This Ward
is rich in a history that needs to be preserved, enhanced and showcased. The
family homes and businesses deserve the best presentation possible. Ward 4 is
also rich with caring individuals, who are concerned about our water quality,
safety and quality of construction, as well as city service and city management.
I challenge you to vote responsibly and sensibly. Do not cast your valuable vote
on social or political affiliations. In the alternative, look carefully at each candidate's credentials and qualifications. I have dedicated myself to the
service industry. For the last 13 years, I served as the exterior facilities
maintenance manager assigned to NASA, responsible for 380!
acres with 144 buildings. I have 3 years with the Cuyahoga County Planning
Commission, 12 years experience with NOACA, and have served on the Middleburg
Heights Planning Commission. I have an in-depth knowledge of Air and Water
Pollution Compliance, infrastructure maintenance, Hazardous Materials, Traffic
Control and Safety. For more than 20 years, I have been a Berea voter and
homeowner. I am a veteran of the US Air Force. If elected, I will seek to have
an independent audit conducted. This will help remove the cloud of suspicion
that hangs over our city. In closing, I remind voters that I accept NO monetary
contributions, have no outside special interest, and no special agenda. Thank
you.

| I recently had a letter printed in the Sun News expressing my opinion
about who is the most qualified candidate for mayor of Berea. Linda Kinsey, the
Editor of our fine newspaper, obviously did not agree with me on certain issues.
She felt she had to add her own misleading comments at the end of my letter,
something I have never seen before. Why my letter? It would be one thing if her
comments had anything to do with what I wrote but they didn't. She insulted my,
as well as other's, intelligence by wording her comments to make the reader
believe I had no clue what I was talking about. If you still have the Sun News
from October 7 go read it. Read it a couple times if that's what it takes to see
how misleading it is. Please tell me, am I wrong for believing I can express myself without someone twisting what I say because they don't agree with me?
Think of how you would feel to express your opinions and have a very simple
minded person insult you. You would understand, !
I am not to pleased. If Ms. Kinsey is reading this, please go back and pay
attention to the sentence that starts with "Included in her voting record...."
and the fact that there has been more redevelopment in Berea besides the
riverfront and the Triangle. Anyway, I have to thank the other concerned
citizens of Berea for taking the time to read this. Please feel free to write

| I wish to correct a rumor being spread this week in Ward 1 to the
effect that I am "on a board at Baldwin-Wallace" that decides to buy residential
properties and "tear down houses to build parking lots". This statement is
totally false. I am employed at Baldwin-Wallace as Associate Dean of Students
and have been in the Student Affairs division for 39 years. My responsibilities
are almost totally dealing with individual students and not with business
affairs. I have never been consulted as to whether the college should or should
not buy any real estate. Decisions on purchases or sale of real estate are made
by the Board of the Trustees. No employee except the President of the college
is a member of the Board.
Incidentally, no houses have been removed for parking since the College
Recreation Center was built on Bagley Road in 1985.
I regret that misinformation on this matter surfaced, and I appreciate this
opportunity to correct it. I will be glad to discuss my role in the college or

Subject - Keeping Residents Informed

|
| To the three year resident: I agree that we must work to keep residents aware of current happenings. Much news travels by word of mouth (we need a town crier!), but it's not always reliable. A new web site to which this one will be linked will be devoted to keeping residents as current as possible. I'd like to also invite you to the Town Forum meetings that normally occur on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 at various venues throughout town. Town Forum meetings are devoted to involving Bereans in all the most important happenings. There is the Community Calendar and Barbara Sherwood's Dateline Berea column in the News Sun, and there is the large notice board in the Triangle. It might help if the town had another (less formal) central bulletin board. Town Forum had a Candidates Night, but I think we neglected to mention the date of the primary election. If you want to learn more about the remaining candidates (including the two mayoral candidates), you may want to come to the League of Women Voters' Candidates Night on Tuesday, October 12 at 7pm in the Berea High School Auditorium. In addition, Town Forum will sponsor one more Candidates Night--just for school board candidates--on Wednesday, October 20 at 7:30. I think it will be at the BHS cafeteria. I agree that the primary was not well enough publicized. I hope Town Forum, the News Sun, and the city administration can continue to look for more effective ways to keep you and other citizens well-informed.

| The condos rise like a sheer unbroken cliff just a few feet from the
street. This precipitous wall is flat and continuous, and it blocks us visually
from the river, our only downtown natural resource. There will be no tax
revenue until the huge expense is paid off. What about the businesses that were
touted? What happened to the Starbucks that was written up on the front page of
the News Sun? That prime central downtown spot should be filled with shops.
Many small locally-owned businesses are doing well in Berea, and I believe
(despite the giant nearby shopping centers) that the right shops could survive
and prosper on the triangle.

Subject - Small Town Politics

|
| I hope that this is allowed to be posted. I have not been a resident
of Berea for very long, only about 3 years. Recently, I have noticed a very
troubling site, that is the small town politics that take place right here in
our back yards. I just read one of the local papers that informed me that the
primary election was held and who the winners were. Funny thing is, I didn't
even know we there were elections being held. Was this our chance to vote? If
so why was there not more advertisement about it? Just like the third time the
school levy was up for decision, did you notice how very quiet that was
kept. No signs to support it, nothing much in the papers. What is going on
here? For a town of such a small population, there are a lot of unknowns. I just read a post about how the mayor was upset about the decision against him.
I had to laugh. I have had no personal interaction with this person, all I know
is what I have read about, both good and bad. I !
have drawn my own conclusions about him and frankly, I do not trust that he is
looking out for the citizens of Berea. I was pleased to hear that there will be
a new mayor in town. I have yet to decide who I will vote for though. I do
believe that this town needs to have an over haul of the government officials.
A new era is needed, fresh blood, new idea's and all with the citizens of Berea
in mind, not personal agendas. It would be nice if there was more communication
to the citizens who elect these official when voting days are, what the issues
are and not to try to keep them quiet or just let them pass by. And yes, I am
aware I have a responsibility as an adult who votes to track this myself,
however, shouldn't there be some sort of notice about this. I also saw recently that all Sun News subscribers are supposed to receive information mailed to
them about council meetings. Is anyone getting these, I'm not. If I had the
time and the energy to further investigate the p!
politics in this town I would, but since I don't, I will just have to move some
day. I hope that a new era is born here in November and that the citizens have
THEIR interests heard and represented. I cant wait..

Subject - Town Houses
|
Date - Sept. 27, 1999
|
| I have mixed feelings about the townhouses. I like the concept of
developing unique housing downtown but the scale of the buildings and their
placement on the parcel just isn't right. The buildings are too tall and too
close to the street -- generally creating a sense of being overwhelmed. I
recently asked my father-in-law what his opinion of the development was since he
lives out of town. His first reaction was that the project was looming over the
rest of downtown -- the buildings didn't seem to "fit in".
I am also still disappointed in the city administration's dealings with the
developer. A municipal expenditure of $400,000 to $800,000 (do we know what the
total was?) was unwarranted. The development of twelve residences will not bring a re-birth to downtown Berea.
Perhaps if the associated retail structures are built we will see an impact, but
I am skeptical regarding this portion of the project. The residential
structures are moving at a snail's pace and no progress has been made at all on
the commercial structures. It is time for the developer, Mario Caprini, to
deliver a report to the City Council and the residents of Berea on the future of
these commercial structures.
Our City Council consented to Trupo's offer of selling the land for $1 and a
substantial municipal investment in infrastructure. In return, Caprini agreed
to build 12 housing units and two commercial structures. The City appears to
have upheld its end of the bargain but has Caprini? A full accounting is in
order -- both of the total expenditure of the City and Caprini's plans for the
commercial structures.

| RTA seems to be determined to run Rapid Transit trains down Front St. in Berea. Why? Who would ride it? Do we want Front St. cluttered with tracks and trolley wires? Where would people from Strongsville and other points to the south park to ride it? If you are concerned about the effects this would have on life in Berea, write to the people who will make the decision. Here are some addresses:
RTA - General Manager Ronald Tober, 1240 W. 6th St., Cleveland, OH 44113.
RTA - President of the Board of Trustees George Dixon, 1240 W. 6th St., Cleveland, OH 44113
NOACA - Executive Director Howard R. Maier, 1299 Superior Ave. NE, Cleveland, OH 44114.
Congressman Dennis Kucinich, (Lakewood Office) 14400 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, OH 44107.
Senator George Voinovich, (Cleveland Office) 1240 E. 9th St., Cleveland, OH 44199.
The last two would probably be concerned with voting for the federal funds if NOACA and RTA approve the project.

| : Front Street doews not need to be widened. I agree with Dave that we
need improvements on Front Street. The trees, the new sidewalks, the old
fashioned street lamps, and more flowers in planters & windowboxes sound great.
And how about a stricter sign ordinance and a storefront improvement project
like the town planner from Medina showed us in his slide show at the Town Forum
meeting a few months ago? But Front Street should not be widened. Remember,
Front Street is also residential. I think there are about 37 residences on
Front Street between Depot and
Bagley. The increased traffic already affects some homes on Third,
Forth, and Fifth Avenues in addition to those on Front Street. Remember the movie Field of Dreams? Do you remember the phrase "Build it and they will
come"? The same applies to Front Street. There are times when you have to
choose between residences and cars. I choose the people of Berea rather than the
drive-through traffic.

| : Front Street NEEDS to be widened! What is at the North End of Berea
that needs to be protected? A bunch of bars and gas stations? Let's widen Front
Street at the north end and make Front St. down there a BEAUTIFUL street. How
about this.. add new trees, sidewalks and planters and "old fashioned " looking
lighting to the project. Add signage indicating that this is the "Berea North
Triangle District" . Do all of this as PART of the widening project. Instead of
trying to stop everything in Berea why not become a part of making these
projects better for the city! If Berea doesn't grow and thrive it DIES! We can't
repeat the mistakes of downtown but we also can't be afraid of IMPROVEMENTS!

|
Date - Sept. 9, 1999
|
| I posted Robert Spada's official Columbus address earlier and some one
asked me to check on the address because there is no street name on the Columbus
address. I phoned his office today and that is the correct address. It does not
have a street name. I hope other's in Berea will take the time to write or
telephone Spada's office and discourage the widening of Front Street. Widening
of Front Street would only ruin this lovely North end neighborhood. Thank you

| I am not surprised at all about Giant Eagle. I was informed about a
year ago that Giant Eagle was looking into property on Bagley Rd. in Middlebug
Hts. close to the fairgrounds. I was wondering why a company would build so
close to another store...now we know why.

| I am a Parknoll resident who is concerned about the Rados farm. Are there plans in the works to sell the farm to a developer? Does the proposed annexation of the property to the City of Berea have any bearing on the sale? I live right on Nobottom Road and I am concerned about getting more traffic on the road. Was the widening, lowering and repaving of Nobottom Road done in an effort to entice development of the Rados Farm area? Thanks

| This past week, Mayor Trupo met with Giant Eagle representatives to
discuss their plans to stay in town. This, after Giant Eagle stated
unequivocally last spring that they had decided to leave. What changed? Call
your local council member, and the mayor's office, as well. It's not time to be
shy. We need to let them know that we haven't changed our minds about the place
of small vs. giant retail in Berea.

message: Hello,
I find it difficult to believe that your local government would try to shut down a site such as this. Is this still the USA ? I wonder if they realize they just opened Pandora's Box?
Hang in there folks , we're with you. -

message: I fully support your efforts to involve your local citizens in the decision forming process. To stand firm in the face of threats by your elected officials is as American as moms' apple pie.Your courage is commendable. M. F. A., Springfield MO
message: Although not a citizen of your city (or state) I applaud your efforts and support your mission.. I heard of your web site via the American Civil Liberties Union Newsletter and was shocked at the response your public officials displayed towards your 1st Amendment rights to disagree with them. It's obvious that your forum is needed. All cities and towns across the US would benefit from a forum of this nature. Please continue your dedicated hard work and know that there is a constitution and many people who stand behind you..
- Good luck and best wishes to you.. K. C.
message: Just read an article about your mayor's displeasure with the public forum of your site....and his efforts at intimidation...
I don't know where Berea town is, and certainly can't comment on it's local politics.......but I despise anyone who attempts to quash free speech, especially when criticism of government is the subject....even a cursory knowledge of history will reveal that this is one of the main reasons our constitutions framers included freedom of speech in the first amendment..
- good luck

I just wanted you to know that there are others throughout these United States that believe you have the right to continue your discussions, whether pro OR con, as to the efficacy of our local elected officials.

message: I recently read about your problem and the ACLU's intervention. As you are well aware of, the web is an electronic form of the soap box in the town square. Fight all efforts to let "them" close you down! Down here in Akron, I'm just waiting for the police department to complain about my web site - parts of which go against the grain.

Subject - skunks
|

|
| We have a skunk problem on our side of Bagley Road also. As a matter
of fact, one of my neighbor's hired a critter catcher to come on a regular basis
and set traps and remove the skunks. I asked the "trapper" why there is such an
increase in skunks. He told me that the skunk population is on the increase
because of groups that oppose trapping. He gave me a staggering figure of the
increase amount and told me that it will only get worse. This is not a problem
common to Berea - it's everywhere. His advice...don't put feeders of any kind
in your yard - birds included - you are not only feeding the birds, but the food
that drops out of the feeders, draws skunks and other critters too. I love the
birds - but have taken his advice and I don't fill my feeders any longer - it has helped a bit - but the skunks so far are still winning. Noah could have left
this particular creature off the ark!

Subject - The Truth

| As I am sure all of you are well acquainted by this time, there has
been some severe strife amongst the citizens and the mayoral offices.
Convention would dictate that we would properly be informed of the happenings,
conflicts, and interlopings of the political arena through our local
journalistic publications, and word of mouth. However, as I can see, both
seemed to have failed to have brought much clarity or acuteness to this much
needed genre of discourse. There is nowhere near a sufficient amount of people
in the city whom truly know of the workings, plottings, and "conspiracies" if
you will. Yet, as was just demonstrated to us, through the valiant efforts a few
righteous crusaders of the city, free speech is still a staple of the American lifestyle, a DAMN IT...I want more of it. For the citizenry to be properly
educated to the commiserations of the city, we need an unhindered and
unencumbered journalistic publication. There appears to be no other viable av!
venue, does there? Excuse the rhetoricalls, but I hope to make a point, being
that if we really wish to know of happenings in our city, that we need an
ubiquitous media. My preference would be a paper of sorts, but by whatever
amalgamation, we need something to service. Consider this if you will, a battle
cry, to rise up a Jihad amongst the populous. I wish to do whatever is
necessitated to accomplish this, and anyone interested, PLEASE contact me. The
situations won't be remedied until we find the cure.

| Also, check your trash cans and compost container to make sure the lids
fit tightly. If you don't have a catch on the lids, place something like a
cinderblock on top to keep the skunks out. Good luck!

Subject - Berea Master Plan Committee - RTA Proposal
|
Date - sept. 1, 1999
|
| The Regional Transit Authority did indeed make a presentation to the
Berea Master Plan Committee on August 30, 1999. Although all of the rail-build
alternatives were discussed, the primary focus of the presentation was the
option which would construct a light-rail line down Front Street to the
Triangle. Within a few minutes of the presentation's beginning, members of the
Master Plan Committee were asking probing questions regarding this option's
viability and it's overall impact upon the character of our town.
Upon conclusion of the RTA's presentation, the members of the Committee passed a
motion opposing the construction of a light-rail line down Front Street -- known
as the B4 Alternative. A copy of this motion is to be sent to the RTA Board. The members of the Master Plan Committee should be commended for this action.
I suggest that all concerned Bereans contact Ronald Tober, the General Manager
of RTA, and encourage him to honor the decision of the Master Plan Committee and
remove the B4 Alternative from further study. In addition, please let the
Master Plan Committee members know that you appreciate their position and
decisive action on this matter.

Date - Sept. 2, 1999

| I think there should be a major priority switch in the city of Berea.
There are families enduring a living hell on Abbyshire Dr. There are children who
cannot sleep at night because of noise and vibration. The noise is so loud that
it actually hurts to be outside in your own yard when the trains go by. The back
wall of some homes are starting to crack. The anger and stress level of the
families living there have tripled. No one wants to live there anymore, it really
stinks!!!
The city got what it wanted, but what about the families that have been
destroyed?
